General
(Retired) Ronald H. Griffith
General (Retired) Ronald H. Griffith retired from the U.S. Army
on 1 November 1997 after nearly 37 years of active duty service.
His last duty position was as Vice Chief of Staff of the Army,
the second highest military position within the Department of
the Army. Prior to that, he was the Army’s Inspector General,
a position he held for four years. General Griffith was the first
Inspector General in the Army’s history to be selected to
wear four stars.
A native of North Georgia, General Griffith graduated from the
University of Georgia in 1960 with a Bachelor of Science degree.
He also holds a Master’s Degree in Public Administration
from Shippensburg State University. General Griffith’s military
experience spans command positions from company to division level
and service on staffs up to Headquarters, Department of the Army.
He led platoons at Fort Hood, Texas and in Korea, was a company
commander in the 2nd Armored Division at Fort Hood, commanded
the 1st Battalion, 32nd Armor in Germany, the 1st Brigade, 2nd
Infantry Division in Korea, and the 1st Armored Division in Germany
and Operations DESERT SHIELD/STORM. Besides his Persian Gulf combat
experience, General Griffith also served as an infantry unit advisor
with the Army of the Republic of Vietnam and as Executive Officer
of the 2nd Battalion, 8th Infantry, 4th Infantry Division, in
Vietnam.
As a field grade officer, General Griffith served in the Pentagon
as a staff officer in the War Plans Division, Office of the Deputy
Chief of Staff for Operations and Plans (DCSOPS), as Chief of
the War Plans Division, and as a Brigadier General, as the Deputy
Director of Operations (DCSOPS). He also served as the Chief of
Staff, and later as the Assistant Division commander of the 1st
Cavalry Division until taking command of the 1st Armored Division
in 1989.
General Griffith serves on the Board of Directors of The Allied
Defense Group and Geonex-Martel Incorporated.
General Griffith is married to Dr. Hurdis Margaret Ann Griffith
(formerly Hoerauf). Dr Griffith presently is the Dean of the College
of Nursing at Rutgers University, the State University of New
Jersey. They have two daughters and five grandchildren.
Presently, General Griffith serves as the Executive Vice President,
MPRI, Inc. in Alexandria, Virginia.
